Funding and providing defibrillators in Cumbria

In October 2013, Cumbria Women in Enterprise (CWE) networking group in Carlisle received free British Heart Foundation Heart StartTM training delivered by Cumbria Fire Service on behalf of North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).

Defibrillation has always been something people associated with medical professionals whether that be the Ambulance Service or within a hospital setting, however portable defibrillators are also now becoming increasingly available within sports centres, large workplaces and football grounds.

In certain towns and cities portable defibrillators are located in various areas and are accessible to the general public in an emergency.  If somebody is in cardiac arrest and a member of the public dials 999 they will be told the location of the nearest defibrillator.  Each machine is stored in a secure metal box which can only be opened with a 4 digit code which is held by the ambulance service.  The caller will only be given the code if the machine is close by and a need has been identified.

We aim to locate a defibrillator in a cabinet every 0.25 miles across Cumbria and in areas with high footfall.
